intelligentEveryone wants to seem intelligent. Regardless of your personality type or how much you don’t care about what people think of you, you just want to seem intelligent. You want everything you do- the way you speak, act, write, even sleep (LOL) to scream INTELLIGENT! We want that particular ‘I’ word to be used to describe us.

While we may think only nerds are intelligent, it isn’t true. The dictionary defines intelligence as the capacity of mind, especially to understand principles, truths, facts or meanings, acquire knowledge, and apply it to practice; the ability to comprehend and learn. This definition is damn long but in summary, to be intelligent is to be bright. It is that you’re not stupid.

Every one of us can be intelligent ( or more) and if you think you’re not, this article is for you. But wait a minute! This article isn’t just for you to know how to seem more intelligent but to help you be more conscious of the image you portray and to help you check some aspects of yourself that need to change.

Here are the six ways to help you seem intelligent…or more intelligent than you are.

1. Be open to new ideas: This is very important. Every intelligent person is open to trying new things, seeing things from d ifferent points of view, and just being open to new experiences. Let people speak, let them air their opinions, and you have to read. Do you know why this is necessary? It is because if you don’t do this, you will actually become stagnant and if you’re stagnant, you obviously can’t seem intelligent. Go here to know more about being open to new ideas. All intelligent people from history have been open to new ideas.

Forget about the word ‘advise’ and instead insert the word ‘speak’ so it will read like this: Only a fool will speak before hearing all the facts. Intelligent people listen! Listen to what the person is saying, listen to his/her body language, facial expressions and so on. Just listen! And when I say listen, I don’t mean simultaneously listening and thinking of what to say next. I mean giving the person your full ears.

b. Think before speaking: There’s quite a difference between listening to facts before speaking and thinking before speaking. Thinking before speaking has a lot to do with our word choices. The words we speak are an indication of how sensitive and intelligent we are. It says a lot about you.  Before you talk, think through every word . . . even in an argument. Listening to facts and thinking are like brothers…or cousins – you don’t need to respond every time, but you need to listen every time.

c. Be Silent: Silence is golden. Stop talking too much. Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent (Prov17:18). There’s a time to be silent and a time to speak. An intelligent person knows when the time is right. If you do not know when, go here.

3. Control Your Emotions: Emotions are crazy. They are good to have and to feel but if not controlled, can put you in trouble. I remember when I was JSS2 (grade 9), my English teacher was always ready to send you out of the class if you were overly emotional. He’d say that it isn’t ‘normal’ for someone to show this amount of emotions in public. An intelligent person never lets his emotions control him. He/she says and does the right things at the right time regardless of what he/she is feeling. In whatever situation you find yourself, never let your emotions do the thinking or speaking . . . or whatever for you.

overlook4. Learn to Overlook Certain Things: To be honest, if you want to seem more intelligent, you will need to overlook some things that happen around you. You don’t need to react to everything. Train yourself to not let most things get to you and even when it does get to you (cos let’s face it, you’re not a robot), do not lose it.

People who quote philosophers usually seem intelligent, so can you imagine how you’d seem when you quote a verse or two from the bible? Following the teachings of Christ is an even greater reward. It skyrockets your intelligence. You can go here to start reading the bible!
