Whenever we hear the word love, the first thing that comes to most of our minds is the sparks that fly between a boy and a girl.  You know, that one we see and say ‘aww, so sweet!’. But I beg to differ.

Love is a strong affection. It is a concern and care for other people and their wellbeing. It doesn’t have to be in a romantic context. In fact, you are a loving individual if you are able to show affection and care to everyone you meet.

Let’s be honest, everyone actually needs and craves for love. Some may not show it, but it’s right there.

Our world is lacking in love. So many things would have been avoided if there was enough love. Think of the first and second world wars, the insurgencies, the killings, the greed and gossips that have destroyed many lives.

Truth is, there’s enough love to go round but people are not willing to give.

Characteristics of Love
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 gave us all the characteristics of love. They are:

* love is patient and kind

* love is not boastful or jealous or proud or rude

* love doesn’t demand it’s own way

* love is not irritable

* love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs

* love is never glad about injustice and it’s happy when the truth wins out

* love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance.

I don’t think there’s anyone who has all these qualities because no one can be that loving. No one is God. But, if you have about 45% of each then you are good to go!

Love is when you hate prostitution (or whatever) but will pray for and not judge prostitutes.

Please do not confuse love with friendships. Love is compulsory but friendships are not. That I love you is because I’m human, not because we are friends or meant to be friends. Love is also different from being in love.

People show love differently. No matter how different your love is, love is love. Learn to accept love, learn to give love. Our world will only get better if we learn to love; not just to people who will return our love, but to those who won’t return it and those who don’t even deserve it.

We will be better individuals, parents, friends, colleagues, and even strangers if we are loving. Yes, we can be loving strangers.

The secret to knowing how to love is to GET GOD! God is love, and when you have Him, you have love and therefore you will be able to give love. You can’t give what you don’t have.
